Hypotheses
- Menstrual taboos will be associated with the presence of a post-partum sex taboo and little father-son contact in early childhood (281).Carroll, Michael P. - Totem and taboo, purity and danger…and fads and fashion in the study of poll..., 1983 - 3 Variables
This article examines three theories regarding the existence of pollution rules. Results show support for a psychological theory put forward by Freud that predicts a relationship between father-child contact, post-partum sex taboos, and menstrual taboos.

The author attempts to test the "Oedipus-complex" hypothesis--the psychoanalytic idea that under certain conditions (such as the long-post partum sex taboo) males are sexually attracted to their mothers and as a consequence certain fears and anxiety are generaated. The hypothesis is tested at the societal-level using ethnographic data.

This study tests predictions of homosexuality. Results suggest that homosexuality is significantly associated with father-son contact.

On the contrary, degree of elaboration of menstrual taboos is associated with increasing length of the postpartum taboo" (104)Young, Frank W. - Menstrual taboos and social rigidity, 1967 - 2 Variables
This study first reviews two explanations of menstrual taboos: taboos as an aspect of social rigidity and a psychogenic interpretation of menstrual taboos. The authors chiefly advocate a sociogenic explanation of menstrual taboos.

The authors test the male Oedipus complex hypothesis with a prediction suggesting that the scale of kin-avoidance is related to "a phobic attitude towards incest" (129).

This study examines the double standard regarding extramarital norms for men and women in relation to other sociocultural factors. Results suggest that a double standard is significantly related to post-partum sex taboos, hypermasculinity, and father absence.
