Hypothesis

Contemporary economic activity will be lower for ethnic groups historically ruled by Islamic kingdoms than for ethnic groups historically ruled by non-Islamic kingdoms. (5)

Note

Night light density was used as a proxy for contemporary economic activity. Results were negative but not significant for the local average treatment effect (LATE) of Islamic kingdoms on night light density in a subset of ethnic groups that neighbor non-Islamic kingdoms. Results were also negative and and not significant for the regression model with Islamic kingdoms and night light density in the whole sample.
