Military organization as a response to residence and size of population: a cross-cultural study

By Carter, Jr., Harold

Hypothesis

"Among societies with virilocal/patrilocal residence, large societies are more likely to have a professional military organization than are small societies" (276).

Note

This correlation may result from an effect of cultural evolution. The author used settlement size as a measure of evolution and looked at the relationship between settlement size and military organization, controlling for residence. Results suggest a weaker relationship between these variables (p= .131).
