Societal complexity will be negatively associated with the presence of adolescent initiation ceremonies (699).
Variables used to measure societal complexity are subsistence economy, sedentariness of settlement, size of focal or typical community, level of political integration. Correlations are made between each of these variables and the presence or absence of initiation ceremonies (700-702).
