  1. Possession-belief-only will be associated with hunting, gathering, and fishing for 46% or more of subsistence; possession-trance belief will be associated with agriculture and/or animal husbandry (43).Bourguignon, Erika - Possession, 1976 - 6 Variables

This book investigates possession and possession-trance. While the author focuses on a case study of Haiti, there are also a handful of cross cultural tests performed. Results suggest that societal complexity is associated with belief in possession-trance, rather than possession alone.

  2. Specific patterns of subsistence strategies exist.Ahedo, Virginia - Let's go fishing: A quantitative analysis of subsistence choices with a spec..., 2021 - 5 Variables

In this study, the authors analyze subsistence economies to better understand their variability and success, the role of the environment in different subsistence choices, and the relevance of fishing, specifically in mixed economies. They find regular subsistence patterns, suggesting that not all subsistence combinations are successful. Their findings also indicate that environment influences subsistence choice, mixed economies are common, and that fishing plays a key role in mixed economies.

  3. Matriliny/matrilocality is associated with horticulture as a means of subsistence.Surowiec, Alexandra - A worldwide view of matriliny: using cross-cultural analyses to shed light o..., 2019 - 8 Variables

The study is about matrilineal systems, where descent is traced along female lines. Matrilineal systems are relatively rare in human populations, and previous research has discussed the rarity and apparent instability of matriliny. The study aims to study the evolution of descent systems on a worldwide scale. The study tests for significant associations between matriliny and numerous cultural traits that have been theoretically associated with its stability or loss, such as subsistence strategy, animal domestication, mating system, residence pattern, wealth transfer, and property succession. Additionally, by combining genetic and linguistic information to build a global supertree that includes 16 matrilineal populations, the study also performs phylogenetically controlled analyses to assess the patterns of correlated evolution between descent and other traits.

  4. Stratification and slavery occur more often in societies where cereal grains, animal husbandry and agriculture are important than in societies where they are not (6)De Leeuwe, J. - Society system and sexual life, 1970 - 3 Variables

The author investigates the associations between production relations, the character of productive forces, and sexual life. A significant correlation was found between production relations and the character of productive forces. Results also showed that more sexual freedom is associated with higher level of development of productive forces and an absence of internal oppression.

  5. The infant/child's age at introduction of liquid and solid non-breastmilk foods tends to be lower in preindustrial populations with agricultural or pastoral subsistence types than in hunting and gathering socieities (p. 50).Sellen, Daniel W. - Relationships between subsistence and age at weaning in "preindustrial" soci..., 2001 - 2 Variables

This study tests the weaning food availability hypothesis, that both the introduction of foods other than breastmilk and the cessation of breastfeeding will vary by society's subsistence type. This hypothesis has implications for demography, as accelerated weaning can lead to increases in both mothers' fertility (due to decreased birth intervals) and infant mortality (due to the presence of pathogens in new foods).

  6. Subsistence type will be associated with the distribution of drought-coping strategies.Biagetti, Stefano - Quantitative Analysis of Drought Management Strategies across Ethnographical..., 2021 - 2 Variables

In this pilot study, the authors investigate the relationships between both subsistence types and environmental conditions, and various coping mechanisms for drought in 35 societies in Africa. Using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), they find subsistence strategies to have a more significant correlation with the distribution of coping strategies for drought than environmental conditions.

  7. Non-maternal contact in hunting, gathering, and fishing societies will most likely be with a play group.Konner, Melvin J. - Relations among infants and juveniles in comparative perspective, 1976 - 2 Variables

This article investigates peer relations in infancy, both in primates and in preindustrial human societies. Data from these populations shows a strong tendency toward a multi-age composition of play groups rather than solely peer-aged play groups for infants. Patterns in child care across societies of different subsistence types are empirically examined.

  8. Subsistence activities performed by males provides a greater proportion of the hunter-gatherer diet than those performed by females (183).Martin, M. Kay - Female of the species, 1975 - 2 Variables

This book discusses the role of women cross-culturally. The authors use a cross-cultural sample to examine the differences between men and women in contribution to subsistence as well as the social juxtaposition of the sexes in foraging, horticultural, agricultural, pastoral, and industrial societies.

  9. Play group contact will be more common in hunting, gathering, and fishing societies than it is in “at least some more advanced subsistence types.”Konner, Melvin J.

  10. Species with long infant dependencies will be negatively associated with breeding seasons (204).Ember, Carol R. - The evolution of human female sexuality: a cross-cultural perspective, 1984 - 2 Variables

This paper suggests a tentative analysis of continuous female sexual receptivity based on a random sample of mammals and birds. It is suggested that humans developed continuous female sexual receptivity because humans have the unusual combination of long infant dependency, group living, and male-female bonding.
