- ". . . presence of a high lineal sense will be related to large differences between the values of a society [with regard to premarital sex and pregnancy] and their actual behavior . . ." (6)Zern, David - The relevance of family cohesiveness as a determinant of premarital sexual b..., 1969 - 2 Variables
This study examines the lineal-collateral value orientation, wherein “emphasis is placed on the individual as an integral part of an extended family type of structure which is primary” (3). Analysis suggests this value orientation is associated with restriction of premarital sexual practices and pregnancy.

"An exchange theory of social behavior is advanced to explain intersocietal differences in sex codes…[Results indicate] modest support for the thesis that the location of power and resources as they influence social interaction and exchange are contributory forces in accounting for the level of sexual permissiveness found in society" (1).

[Societies] where there was high constancy of presence of the nurturant agent . . . had a separate name for the mother" (112)Zern, David - The relationship between mother/infant contact and later differentiation of ..., 1972 - 2 Variables
This study examines the relationship between mother absence in child rearing and kinship terminology, particularly the differentiation of daughters and nieces. A significant association is found and the author offers theories of causality in both directions.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Adolescent suicide will be associated with values and norms for premarital intercourse and pregnancy (132).Lester, David - Adolescent suicide and premarital sexual behavior, 1970 - 5 Variables
This study examines the relationship between adolescent suicide and attitudes toward premarital sexual behavior. Several hypotheses were tested, but no associations reached statistical significance.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - High socialization pressure and group cohesion in value orientation will be positively and independently associated with cultural complexity (186, 194).Zern, David - The impact of values on development in a cross-cultural sample, 1982 - 3 Variables
This article investigates relationships between socialization practices, group values, and cultural complexity. Analysis suggests that child-rearing variables and group cohesion in value orientation contribute significantly and independently to cultural complexity.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - "Societies characterized by high accessibility of caretakers [child care] will have permissive premarital sex norms. Societies characterized by low accessibility of caretakers will ave restrictive premarital sex norms" (393)Broude, Gwen J. - Norms of premarital sexual behavior: a cross-cultural study, 1975 - 2 Variables
This article examines correlates of premarital sexual norms cross-culturally. Several explainations of restrictiveness of premarital sex are reviewed, and results indicate that accessibility of caretakers in childhood, class stratification and cultural complexity are all related to premarital sexual norms.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - A number of measures of stressful esperiences in development will be related to higher cognitive functioning as measured by games of strategy (169).Zern, David - Child-rearing practices and games of strategy, 1979 - 5 Variables
This study examines the relationship between disequilibrium and cognitive development using measurements of child-rearing, presence of high gods, and games of strategy.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - High population density will be positively associated with pathological behavior in humans (i.e. homicide, suicide, drunken brawling, male insobriety, witchcraft attribution, and divorce) (743).Levinson, David - Population density in cross-cultural perspective, 1979 - 2 Variables
This article investigates how population density affects social behavior, particularly whether it is a cause of stress in humans that manifests in pathological behavior or mistreatment of children. Analysis indicates that population density is not a cause of these behaviors, and with some variables (such as with divorce and sexual anxiety), there is a negative association with population density.
