Hypotheses
- "Iroquois [kin] terms . . . are associated with preferred cross-cousin marriage" (138)Goody, Jack - Cousin terms, 1970 - 2 Variables
This article tests hypotheses related to kinship terms, cousin marriage, and descent rules. Omaha, Crow, Eskimo, and Iroquois systems are each significantly associated with different kinship rules. Material from Northern Ghana is also considered.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - In societies where there is superordinate justice, females will tend to have property rights (278, 138).Textor, Robert B. - A Cross-Cultural Summary: Status of Women, 1967 - 2 Variables
Textor summarizes cross-cultural findings on the status of women in relation to cultural, environmental, psychological, and social phenomena.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Extensive menstrual taboos are positively associated with individual female puberty rites (138)Kitahara, Michio - Female physiology and female puberty rites, 1984 - 2 Variables
The purpose of this paper is to examine female puberty rites and to suggest that such rites may be explained in terms of female physiology, as symbolized, for example, by menstruation.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - There will tend to be an absence of subordinate punishment in societies freely permitting premarital sexual relations (389, 138).Textor, Robert B. - A Cross-Cultural Summary: Premarital Sexual Relations, 1967 - 2 Variables
Textor summarizes cross-cultural findings on premarital sexual relations pertaining to cultural, environmental, psychological, and social phenomena.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Societies where superordinate justice is prevalent will be less likely to have avunculocal, patrilocal, or virilocal marital residence (204, 138).Textor, Robert B. - A Cross-Cultural Summary: Marital Residence, 1967 - 2 Variables
Textor encapsulates cross-cultural findings on marital residence relating to cultural, environmental, psychological, and social phenomena.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - ". . . the relationship between migration and residence controlling on the presence versus absence of purely external warfare . . . becomes nonsignificant in both control conditions" (138)Ember, Carol R. - An evaluation of alternative theories of matrilocal versus patrilocal residence, 1974 - 3 Variables
This paper investigates the relationship between marital residence and warfare. The author evaluates two theories proposing opposite causalities: one, that internal warfarecauses patrilocality; the other, that residence comes first and influences type of warfare. The author presents a new model emphasizing the role of population size in determining type of warfare, which in turn affects marital residence. However, the role of migration in determining marital residence is also considered.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Societies in which the principal nonparental caretaker is an adult nonrelative and is predominantly the same sex as the child will be positvely associated with the occurrence of initiation ceremonies (138-139).Barry III, Herbert - Early childhood precursors of adolescent initiation ceremonies, 1980 - 3 Variables
This study presents a psychological theory for adolescent initiation ceremonies. Findings support the hypothesis that initiation is a mechanism for maintaining continuity between the stages of childhood and adulthood, when the body is physiologically in discontinuity.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Societies in which social solidarity (low emphasis on obedience and low frequency of teasing) and sex differentiation are present in early childhood will be associated with the occurrence of initiation ceremonies (136, 138).Barry III, Herbert - Early childhood precursors of adolescent initiation ceremonies, 1980 - 4 Variables
This study presents a psychological theory for adolescent initiation ceremonies. Findings support the hypothesis that initiation is a mechanism for maintaining continuity between the stages of childhood and adulthood, when the body is physiologically in discontinuity.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - "[There is] a relationship . . . between Iroquois and preferential bilateral cross-cousin marriage, since Iroquois terminology tends to be associated with weak matrilineality and patrilineality and therefore with societies which . . . tend to be bipotestal" (138)Coult, Allan D. - Terminological correlates of cross-cousin marriage, 1965 - 2 Variables
This study examines Crow and Omaha kinship terminologies, cross-cousin marriage practices, and descent rules. Several hypotheses relating these three variables are tested.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - "The incidence of orchestral unison and one beat orchestral rhythm decreases with complexity. . . . The two most complex forms of organization of orchestral rhythm, counterpoint and heterophony [are] strongly associated with complex modes of production" (138, 139).Lomax, Alan - Song as a measure of culture, 1968 - 4 Variables
This chapter explores the relationship between cultural complexity and song. Several measures of cultural complexity are correlated with different aspects of singing. All hypotheses are supported.
