  1. The gender of weaver will be associated with trade (33).O'Brian, Robin - Who weaves and why? weaving, loom complexity and trade, 1999 - 2 Variables

This article examines the relationship between craft specialization, technological complexity, the gendered division of labor, and trade. Seeking to understand the shift from women to men as primary weavers, the author finds that trade is a strong predictor but technological complexity of looms is not.

  3. Teen pregnancy will decline as economic development increases (33).Barber, Nigel - On the relationship between country sex ratios and teen pregnancy rates, 2000 - 2 Variables

This study attempted to replicate earlier findings regarding population structure and teen pregnancy rates. Findings support the previous predictions that sex ratio, economic development, and latitude are all inversely related to teen birth rates.

  4. Matrilineal descent will be associated with higher status for women (33)Whyte, Martin King - The status of women in preindustrial societies, 1978 - 2 Variables

This book is concerned with explaining variation in the status of women. The author, after measuring over 50 aspects of status, first concludes that status is not a unitary concept. Therefore the author looks at 10 different domains of status. Many traditional explanations are not supported; most support is found for the influence of social complexity which generally lowers female status.

  5. Arranged marriage will be positively associated with prevalence of rape. (33)Apostolou, Menelaos - Individual Mate Choice in an Arranged Marriage Context: Evidence from the St..., 2017 - 2 Variables

The author performs tests of hypothesized relationships between arranged marriage and various forms of non-sanctioned mate choice. Overall, the author theorizes that where marriages are arranged, mate choice will be found in higher prevalence of premarital sex, extramarital sex, and rape. Most tests support these relationships in the hypothesized directions, suggesting that strict regulation of marriage provides parents with some, but far from complete control over the mate choice of their offspring.

Drawing on various theories regarding the sexual division of labor, Broude examines the relationship between task differentiation by sex and gender-related behaviors/customs.

  8. Polygyny will be associated with the presence of slaves owned as social capital (p. 33).Pryor, Frederic L. - A comparative study of slave societies, 1977 - 2 Variables

This article tests a broad hypothesis that slavery is an inevitable stage in society's economic development. The author rejects this hypothesis; he argues that there are two main types of slavery (slaves for economic capital or social capital) and each type has its own set of social and politcal determinants. Overall, the power dynamic between husbands and wives is thought to be a key predictor of slavery.

  10. 33) Reincarnation beliefs is positively associated with hereditary succession of the community headsman.Matlock, James Graham - A cross-cultural study of reincarnation ideologies and their social correlates, 1993 - 2 Variables

This dissertation discusses the divided theoretical approach to how reincarnation, animism, spirits, and general religious beliefs occur within societies cross-culturally. Matlock offers evidence to support Tyler, contradicting the generally accepted Durkheimian approach, arguing that the belief about souls and spirits may originate in dreams and other empirical experiences, in turn informing and shaping social organization. Durkheim argued the opposite, claiming that religious beliefs reflect social organization such as the clan and kinship. The author states 33 quantitative hypotheses to be tested using 30 of the first 60 sample societies available in the HRAF Probability Sample.
