- The presence of agriculture is associated with larger house areas.Hrnčíř, Václav - Identifying post-marital residence patterns in prehistory: A phylogenetic co..., 2020 - 2 Variables
This study examines the association between post-marital residence patterns and dwelling size in pre-industrial societies using comparative methods and a global sample of 86 societies. The results suggest that matrilocality is associated with larger dwellings (over 65 square meters) in agricultural societies, while patrilocality is associated with smaller dwellings. The study also finds that sedentism is the single best predictor of house size. The study concludes that post-marital residence and house size evolve in a correlated fashion, which can help make reliable inferences about the social organization of prehistoric societies from archaeological records.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Agricultural type and intensity will be curvilinearly related to women's contribution to subsistence; women will contribute the least in societies without agriculture and with intensive agriculture (1691).Sanday, Peggy Reeves - Toward a theory of the status of women, 1973 - 2 Variables
This study tests an ecological-economic theory of female contribution to subsistence, focusing on subsistence type as a potential correlate. In an exploratory analysis, 28 independent variables (not all listed below) are examined. The relationship between female contribution to subsistence and female status is also examined.

Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Subsistence types with higher technology levels (advanced horticulture, agrarian) will have more warfare than those with lower technology levels (simple horticulture, hunting and gathering) (28).Nolan, Patrick D. - Toward an ecological-evolutionary theory of the incidence of warfare in prei..., 2003 - 2 Variables
This article reassesses the question of relative peacefulness/violence of preindustrial societies. It tests two materialist theories suggesting that more advanced subsistence techniques and population pressure will increase the likelihood of warfare.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Matrilineal descent will be positively associated with female contribution to subsistence and negatively associated with dependence on cultivation (219).Martin, M. Kay - Female of the species, 1975 - 4 Variables
This book discusses the role of women cross-culturally. The authors use a cross-cultural sample to examine the differences between men and women in contribution to subsistence as well as the social juxtaposition of the sexes in foraging, horticultural, agricultural, pastoral, and industrial societies.
