Outline of Cultural Materials – Origin & Print

The Outline of Cultural Materials, first developed by G.P. Murdock in the 1940s, is an ethnographic classification system on human behavior, social life and customs, material culture, and human-ecological environments. In the past this indexing system was used in the paper and microfiche versions of the Collection of Ethnography and now the OCM subject thesaurus serves the eHRAF World Cultures and eHRAF Archaeology databases.

When the OCM subject classification system may serve purposes outside the use of eHRAF, such for use in museum collections, or even just as template to help create for one’s unique  index,  the print version may be useful.  A print copy of the OCM is 300+ pages, can be ordered from HRAF,  and contains the following:

  • A list of the 90+ major OCM categories (e.g. 750 Sickness)
  • A list of the 700+ OCM subcategories (e.g. 751 Preventive Medicine, 753 Theory of Disease)
  • Detailed descriptions of the OCM subjects
  • An alphabetic index of the OCM terms
  • Information about the types of subject categories, developmental perspectives, and the use of the OCM in field research

Outline of Cultural Materials –  Online

While the print version of the OCM reflects the original format of the Outline of Cultural Materials in the eHRAF databases it is modified to an electronic format.  It can be found in Browse Subjects, or used as “text finder” in the Add Subjects function of an Advanced Search.  In a Basic Search it is used to automatically “map” keywords to the extensive OCM subject thesaurus.

The User Guide provide instructions on how the OCM subjects can be used in an Advanced Search in eHRAF World Cultures and eHRAF Archaeology.

OCM Subject – Short PDF Format

This printable list contains all the OCM subjects, cultures, and archaeological traditions currently covered in eHRAF World Cultures and eHRAF Archaeology.  It’s layout is simple, colorful and convenient for various uses including:

  • Faculty –as handout when teaching a class and for students to get familiar with the subject indexing and culture classification system
  • Researchers — as handy reference when studying cultural diversity
  • Librarians — as guide when helping patrons, or informing colleagues & faculty about what’s included in eHRAF

The OCM-Cultures-Traditions PDF was last updated on April 5, 2014 to reflect new additions of cultures, archaeological traditions, and changes to the OCM subjects.  The next update is scheduled for fall 2014.
