HRAF Global Scholar: Tegegne Mekuria
Title: Assistant Professor, Department of English Language and Literature
University Affiliation: Wollo University, Ethiopia
Research Topic: Integrating Critical Thinking and Cultural Exploration in EFL Learning
Tegegne Mekuria is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Wollo University in Ethiopia. His research focuses on integrating critical thinking and cultural exploration in EFL learning.
In his research, Tegegne focuses on the ways in which language teaching can be tailored to the specific needs of conflict-affected communities, taking into account the unique cultural contexts and communication styles of these groups. He also explores the role of language in promoting social inclusion and addressing issues of power imbalance, discrimination, and marginalization. By examining the experiences of diverse communities around the world, he hopes to identify best practices and develop effective strategies for language teaching in conflict-affected contexts.
In addition to his research, he also uses eHRAF World Cultures in his teaching, incorporating the database into his course curriculum to provide students with a rich and diverse range of ethnographic texts that can help them better understand the complexities of cross-cultural communication. By using eHRAF to teach students about the intersections of language, culture, and conflict, he hopes to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective language teachers and social change agents in their own right. Through his research and teaching, he aims to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on language teaching and conflict resolution, and to help promote more effective and culturally sensitive language teaching practices in conflict-affected contexts.
HRAF is honored to feature Tegegne Mekuria as one of our HRAF Global Scholars for 2024. We wish him continued success with his research.
