Gender Roles in a Cross-Cultural Perspective

This OCM subject is used to index discussions of gender-specific values, behavior, roles, relationships, and activities and the extent to which the values, etc. are exclusive to each gender and that are not covered elsewhere. This category is used for discussions of interpersonal relations within the same gender and between genders.

In eHRAF World Cultures the OCM subject “gender roles” is used to index discussions of gender-specific values, behavior, roles, relationships, and activities and the extent to which the values, etc. are exclusive to each gender and that are not covered elsewhere. In eHRAF’s Advanced Search the “Add Subjects” function can be used to pick “gender roles” as OCM subject to search across cultures of the world’s major regions.

Using OCM subject(s) in an Advanced Search in eHRAF World Cultures

Step 1. Find a subject that is related to gender roles.

Click Add Subjects –use A-Z index, Major Subjects, or tabs to find “matching” subjects for your topic:

>A-Z Index (type the word “gender roles” in index box) or

>Major Subjects> Social Relationships > Gender Roles and Issues (OCM 890)

>OCM Code> 800 range under Gender Roles and Issues (OCM 890)

Step 2. Click “Search” to perform a cross-cultural search. This will search the ethnographic texts on gender roles and issues for cultures, ethnic groups, and indigenous people of major geographic regions (e.g. Africa, Asia, Middle East, etc.).
